There are very few entertainers whose fortune reached up to $1 billion. Just recently, Jay-Z broke a record and became the first hip-hop artist to do so. Besides being a successful rapper and a beloved husband, it is clear that he is leaving permanent traces in business. So, how did Jay-Z transcend into the golden age of his life?

Perhaps, the biggest secret behind his success is that he always created his own brands and never promoted another brand. During the first half of the nineties, he was allegedly a drug dealer.

When he decided to become a musician, he founded his own label called Roc-A-Fella Records. This was completely his own work which ended up earning him over 20 Grammy Awards and 14 albums that had number 1 debuts in Billboard 200.

His self-reliant business persona expanded into other industries in the beginning of the millennium. Rocawear was a clothing line with clothes and accessories initiated by Jay-Z. The sales earned him a net income of 400 million USD in less than 3 years. In mid 2000s, he founded the sports club called 40/40 club.

It was more like a chain of clubs that had branches in Las Vegas. He also invested in beauty products of the cosmetic brand Carol’s Daughter.

In 2010s, he made investments that brought him the ultimate success. One of them was the Armand de Brignac champagne that he invested 200 million USD in 2014. The luxury-wine and spirits company had significant demand from celebrities. Its signature look was the gold bottles.

He had the biggest portion of his income from this brand with 310 million USD. It shouldn’t be surprising since he invested four times more money in the company than he did for his music. In addition to the champagne business, he also has a joint venture with Bacardi that gave rise to the cognac brand D’Usse.

There were 200000 annual sales that helped the company grow 80% every year. Jay-Z’s net income from D’Usse is 100 million USD. He is one of the few entertainers who make more money from an industry other than the entertainment sector.

Jay-Z invested substantially in entertainment and media. In 2008, he founded Roc Nation containing a record label, a talent agency, concert production and other media-related activities. Many artists including Jay-Z’s wife Beyoncé also made contributive investments. The company contributes an additional 75 million USD to Jay-Z’s fortune.

He purchased the Norwegian technology company Aspiro, launching the streaming service called Tidal in 2014. He successfully promoted Tidal with posters and announcements of his 13th studio album that would immediately be available on the platform. Tidal had a net income of 100 million USD.

His other sources of income were from music catalogues, art collection and real estate. He owns mansions in East Hampton, New York and Los Angeles. These mansions boast a real estate value worth 50 million USD. He purchased an Andy Warhol collection for 4.5 million USD after using some his work on the cover of his 2011 album Decoded. His overall art collection is estimated to be worth 70 million USD.

It seems that this is only the beginning for Jay-Z and that he won’t control the business, but he will become the business himself.

Over two decades now, the extraordinary and talented singer has been relevant in the music industry. Celebrating this milestone has called for well-wishes and praises from family, industry colleagues, and fans worldwide.

It’s been a fantastic journey in the superstar’s life. Today, marking her 40th birthday, it has been widely celebrated globally, especially among African-American young female musicians she set the pace for.

Beyoncé has indeed been of great inspiration to many artists in the music and entertainment industry. The love showered on Beyonce today is fantastic. MTV took Beyoncé’s fans back to 2014 when she was awarded as the Video Vanguard at the VMAs as a way of celebrating her legacy on her special day.

UN Women also took to Twitter to celebrate the screen goddess for her remarkable impact in the role of women empowerment and equality. Taylor swift media sent hearty good wishes to her and praised her for her kindness and significant influence in the music industry.

Beyoncé Turns 40 - African CELEBS

Several media outlets, including BET, Netflix, and Billboard, have paid tribute to the greatest of all-time entertainer. Other artists, including Billie Elish, Kehlani, Dream Girls, Essence, and a lot more, have shared in the joy of the icon.

Her pictures and collection of her early music to her current projects and excerpts of series of her fiercely stage performances have been displayed on social media to celebrate her legendary contribution in the world of entertainment, fashion, and lifestyle. Yes! It’s been a red-letter day in the life of the music star.

Last year, the Grammy awards winner marked her 39th birthday in a grand style with series of projects including her Lion King; The Gift album, which featured some African artists like Wizkid, Shatta Wale, Burna Boy, Tiwa Savage, Tekno, Yemi Alade, etc. alongside her “Black Is King” Visual album which has been well-received across the globe.

Queen Bey was engulfed with love and gifts from her destiny child group and her family. Her mother complied with her very young age stage performances in joy as she celebrated her daughter’s feet on Instagram.

Beyoncé Turns 40 - African CELEBS

Beyoncé gained public recognition at a very age when she was just 9years as a leading vocalist for the R&B music group known as Destiny’s Child. Subsequently, she competed and won talent shows with her sensational singing and electrifying dancing skills.

She released her debut album “Dangerously in Love” as a solo artist in 2003, which sold successfully and earned her awards, including five Grammys. Later she began acting and starred in a couple of movies such as Austin Powers in Goldmember, 2002, Dream Girls, Carmen: A Hip Hopera, Pink Panther, and Obsessed. Climbing to the top of her music career, she closely worked with top-notch talents like Sean Paul, her beloved Jay-Z, and Missy Elliot.

Following her debut album, dangerously in love, Beyoncé has released hits upon hits on projects such as “B’Day,” “I Am… Sasha Fierce”, “Funk,” “Beyoncé” and “Lemonade,” all released between 2006 and 2016. In 2018, she collaborated with her Jay- Z on another album dubbed Everything Is Love as the Carters.

As an internationally recognized music star and actress, Beyoncé has earned numerous awards from awards schemes like MTV Video Music Awards, Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, and Forbes. This year, Time’s Magazine mentioned her as one of the 100 women who defined the last century.

Beyoncé is also a philanthropist who has led many humanitarian activities under the Beygood Foundation to support less privileged individuals and vulnerable communities. The foundation has helped in education by providing scholarships and grants, empowering women, disaster relief initiatives, just to mention a few.

Even though he doesn’t show it, the rapper/ producer P.has turned 50 on Saturday. Time flies.

It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that the birthday event hosted more celebrities than the Grammy’s.

Among the guests were Cardi B, the Kardashians, Kanye West, Beyonce, Jay-Z, Naomi Campbell, Snoop Dogg, Kylie Jenner, Post Malone,

Pharrell Williams, Dr. Dre, Lil Kim, Mary J. Blidge and Leonardo DiCaprio. We suppose we could say it was a tribute to the early 00’s music industry with all these names.

One a side note, Diddy’s birthday was in November but he decided to celebrate it together with the birthday of his former partner Kim Porter,

who passed away last year. It was also more convenient for him because some of the celebrity guests wouldn’t have been able to make it in November.

Indeed, at an event with so many celebrities, there were some interesting moments.

The live performances of Lil Kim and Mary J. Blidge were some of the highlights of the night. Beyonce, Kelly Rowland, and Jay-Z were seen singing along.

However; there was a little tension emerging when a random guest started to record them on the phone, to which reacted.

In the meantime, Jay Z’s watch attracted a lot of attention. He was wearing a Patek Philippe worth 2.2 million USD.

Another instant of the event was the reunion between Jay-Z and Kanye West, who hadn’t been spotted together for a long time.

The celebrities had a feud 3 years ago after Kanye West ranted about the Carters on stage.

Although many fans reacted positively to this reunion, some couldn’t help but notice the dissatisfaction on Jay Z’s face when he saw Kanye.

50 Cent even mocked the situation by sharing a story with a picture of Diddy, Pharrell, Jay Z, and Kanye. It’s hard to deny how grumpy Jay Z looks in the picture.

In his story, 50 Cent wrote “This is exactly why I ask who all gonna be there?”.

Leonardo DiCaprio was among the guests having the best time. He was spotted dancing with his friends and girlfriend Camila Morrone.

The menu was also quite rich and a bit controversial. There was a weird combination of gourmet meals and McDonald’s sandwiches.

The main alcoholic beverage was obviously Ciroc, the vodka brand for which Diddy holds shares.

Although none of the celebrities brought him presents, his son Christian Combs bought him an extravagant painting that consisted of 100,000 stones crusted on diamond.

The African influence in the world music has become increasingly visible

This owes to the influential musicians of Africa whose music sailed overseas and proven their originality. One of the pioneers of this movement is the Beninese American singer Angelique Kidjo.

Her creativity and activist personality earned her top spots in the lists like The Guardian’s Top 100 Most Inspiring Women and Forbes’ Most Powerful Celebrities in Africa.

Angelique Kidjo: African Female Legend

Kidjo was born in Benin in 1960 to a father from the Fon ethnic group and a mother from the Yoruba people. Her biggest inspirations in childhood includes, Miriam Makeba, Fela Kuti, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Wonder, Otis Redding.

She was performing on stage along with her mother at age 6. In elementary school and high school, she was part of a school band called Les Sphinx.

MUSIC CAREER: She then released her first album Pretty that instantly became a commercial success. She relocated to Paris in 1983 due to unrest in Benin. She met her producer and future husband, Jean Hebrail.

Angelique was initially doing back vocals until she became the lead singer in Pili Pili and released three albums. Her work in Pili Pili made her considerably famous across Paris and eventually led to her discovery by Island Records founder Chris Blackwell.

Also recorded four albums with the record label. Her 1991 album Logozo topped the Billboard World Music Chart, while the 1994 album Aye earned her the first Grammy nomination.

She featured Santana (whom she listened to as a child) in one of her songs in the album Fifa (1995). In the following collections collectively called Trilogy, Kidjo’s first Grammy award was for  album Djin Djin.

The album featured a collection of distinguished soul artists like Joss Stone, Alicia Keys, Ziggy Marley, Josh Groban, Peter Gabriel and more.
