Sheffield United says reaction to their initial decision to take Ched Evans “has been at an intensity that could not have been anticipated”.

Former Sheffield United striker Ched Evans was been released from prison after serving half of his five-year sentence for rape… Nick Clegg said the decision by Sheffield United was the best. Olympic champion Jessica Ennis-Hill said she would have her name removed from one of the Bramall Lane stands should Sheffield United allow Ched Evan to play for the club again… Because he is a very good player most of his fans believe he will bounce back soon…

Many Blades fans have called for him to be rehabilitated, but almost 150,000 people have signed an online petition urging the Bramall Lane club not to welcome him back.
