The Dinka people of South Sudan are believed to be the tallest in Africa. Today, this African race in its more or less pure form lives mainly in the southern Sudan and surrounding areas.

To cap it all, celebrities are making things work and one can surely take positives from the lives of these people. Yes, they may choose to be celebrities, however, it is the people that made them who they are today.

Why should the same people think celebrities are any different now that they have risen to stardom? No one was born with a heart of stone, therefore, we should see them as people like us living normal day life.

Ger unite with his mother after 18 yearsGer Duany Ger DuanyGer Duany is an actor, model, filmmaker, based in the United States. He left his native home when things became apart, just like the meaning of his name – Ger – when things become apart.

Fate led him to his debut on the Hollywood silver screen where he played a refugee in the movie;”I (Heart) Huckabees.” Director David O. Russell said he wanted someone who had endured the real life experience of being a refugee to play the role. He later had a very important role in the 2011 drama Restless City.

In 2010, he produced and starred in the documentary Ger: To Be Separate, about his search for his family, after 18 years apart. He told the story of his long journey from a war child to a refugee to a Hollywood actor and a model, and the story of his return to South Sudan, to vote for the first time and celebrate the country’s newly acquired independence on July 9, 2011. Former Sudanese child soldier, now an actor and model, Ger Duany is back in the country where he is expected to be named the UNHCR ambassador. Ger was spotted at the Nairobi screening of the Africa Magic Video Choice Awards screening at Mama Ashanti’s in Muthangari.

The Good Lie star will this evening be named the voice and face for refugees by the international organisation. Ger visited Dadaab Refugee Camp last month for the first time in 22 years after he relocated to America.Ger Duanyjpg

Emmanuel Nyabera, associate public information officer UNHCR, told Word Is in a past interview, “It has been 22 years since he left for resettlement in the US. He gives a voice to other refugees, especially now we have emergencies all over Africa. It is easy to forget the situation that is ongoing for a long time. He needed voice in creating awareness on refugees in Kenya and in Africa.”

Nyabera explained that Ger’s status in the entertainment industry serves the cause well because “he is someone who came from being a refugee. Many people would think they are hopeless but he never gave up. He spoke to the refugees in Dadaab and told them that home is in your mind. His message is not to give up.”

Before this visit late last year, Ger visited Kakuma Refugee Camp with UNHCR Kenya, looking to reunite with his long lost family. At 14, Ger fled to Ethiopia. He eventually got asylum in the United States where he developed a love for basketball. It led to a college scholarship, but during an off year caused by injury, Ger ended up getting cast by chance in film which spiralled later into a successful modelling career.
