Jovenel Moise: Haiti President Assassinated

GONE TOO SOON –  Sad news reaching the world this morning is that, the President of Haiti, Jovenel Moise has been assassinated in an attack by unknown group of people.

A statement from the country’s acting Prime Minister Claude Joseph revealed that the president was fatally shot and murdered by unidentified group in his residence in the early hours of Wednesday, July 07, 2012.

President Jovenel Moise’s wife,  Martine Marie Etienne Joseph was also shot but sustained injuries and receiving treatment at the moment.

Miami Herald Carribean reporter Jacqueline Charles told CBS This Morning and BBC News that the assassins ‘spoke Spanish and English with an American accent’.

Haiti for the past decades, has historically been encountering political instability with back and forth coups and protests from its leaders and natives. The country has been in chaos humanitarian crises, natural disasters like earthquakes, gangs and more killing huge number of citizens.

President Jovenel Moise began his presidential journey in 2017, succeeding  president, Michel Martelly who has also passed away recently.

Before his political achievement, he was a renowned entrepreneur who used to export bananas under his agricultural project. He was working closely with his former wife, Martine Marie Etienne Joseph, whom he met in the college to help under privileged societies in Haiti through the production of banana in those communities. 

His effort in developing rural communities earned him the nickname, ‘Banana Man.” He also founded his company known as Port-de-Paix which deals in JOMAR Auto Parts and drinking water distribution in rural areas.

However, he ventured into politics in 2015, when his predecessor, Michel Martelly designated a major political role of becoming the flagbearer of the Haitian Tèt Kale Party founded by Michel Martelly.

Between 2015 and 2017, Hait’s political transfer faced controversies and violent protests. There was not smooth transfer of leadership until an interim president was inducted.

Under president Moise’s rule in recent years, has been going through political back causing division and humanitarian crisis in the Caribbean state. The economic and social life of citizens have been precarious due to widespread dismay which escalated last month.
